ultrafine copper powder is a very expensive element. this is not due to the amount of material used, but rather the complexity of production. to obtain copper powder that can be used for medical and aerospace purposes, the particle size must be no larger than 1 µm, the particles must be approximately circular, and the purity must be at least 99.999%. copper powder of this quality costs between 1,300 and 2,500 euro per gram, depending on the quantity purchased. to produce one gram of this powder, many times more copper and many more solutions, catalysts and additives are needed. the most expensive thing in this process, however, is the equipment necessary to produce it.
the annual global demand for ultrafine copper powder is 12 15 tons. however, a much larger amount of copper is used for financing. it is impossible to verify how much copper powder has disappeared into bank vaults around the world and will likely never come out again.
