the size of the market for fertilizer in south africa is 2 million tons a year, 690 million united states dollars in monetary terms. south african farmers import 80% of their fertilizer requirements because the local fertilizer producing companies are not able to satisfy demand. neighbouring companies also depend on south africa for supply. as a result some of the imports are exported to neighbouring countries.
most companies closed because their production infrastructure and machinery is out dated and too expensive to replace.
maize accounts for 41% of total fertilizer application while the second largest fertilizer consumer is sugar cane at 18%. south africa imports 80% of fertilizer requirements.
sugarcane is planted in the province of mpumalanga and kwazulu natal. both these provinces plant 432000 hectares of sugarcane.
