Fucus vesiculosus is a brown seaweed belonging to the Fucale species. Its flattened thallus, a few tens of centimetres long, is branched dichotomously. Either side of its midrib, it bears bladders filled with air — hence its name — which serve as floats so that that it stands vertically in the water.
Harvesting takes place throughout the year on rocky shores exposed at low tide. Its English name is bladderwrack, but the local name is "Goémon" hence the name of the people who have harvested it by hand for generations, "Goémoniers".
