Dulse, Palmaria palmata, is a red seaweed belonging to the Palmariale species. It has a more or less palmate frond shape, from which its name derives. The reddish brown blade has a thallus that is dichotomously divided into strips 2 to 3 cm wide and up to 50 cm long.
It is attached by a basal disc shaped holdfast and grows in the intertidal zone on rocky substrates, up to the high water mark where it occurs as an epiphyte growing especially on Laminaria hyperborea.
Palmaria palmata is collected by hand, in beaches and rocks, bays and headlands where it finds an ideal habitat.
Dulse is a 100% natural product, traditionally eaten in Scandinavia. In addition to its nutritive richness, it is appreciated for its colour and soft texture. In fact, Dulse is halfway between the delicate seaweeds such as Sea Lettuce and Nori and the coarser seaweeds such as Haricot and Kombu.
